This hero has a family problem which requires his immediate marriage. He appears during the season searching for a future bride. Based on a friend's recommendation the hero creates a list of women desperate to marry. He attends the infamous musicale, and selects the only one of the musicians eligible to marry. He has his friend introduce him to Iris and based on his 10 minute conversation, decides she is the woman to pursue. She is in her 20's, not conventionally pretty, intelligent and outspoken. Therefore not particularly popular, nor unpopular. Although the hero appears to like her, after pursuing her for one week, he proposes marriage. When she requests time, he deliberately compromises her forcing a betrothal. He insists on being married within the week and takes her off to North England. One wonders if she insisted on additional time to know him better, would he have walked away to compromise another? Although the heroine likes what she knows of him, she actually doesn't know him very well. He refuses to consummate the marriage. It's not until she has been in her new home for one week, still with an unconsumated marriage, she meets his younger sisters and learns why he married her. He had many opportunities to explain the situation to her, but, keeps secrets until the heroine has no choice but to agree his decisions. I really don't like books were the heroine is forced into situations, not of her own making, then forced to live with the consequences of someone else's decision. She falls in love with someone who so disregarded her, he throws away his honor and her honor too. I can understand not actively hating him, because divorce was so very difficult and expensive during that period, but I can't imagine trusting him again.
